Accessibility
(or: Are we really thousands of miles from everyone?)
-
Your reservation should include a door code to allow you access to the unit during the window of your stay.
If you have any access issues please contact the on-island management company (Knutson & Associates) 808-862-6872
-
The entrance gate is closed 5pm-6am Weekdays and all day Sat & Sun. This includes a pedestrian gate adjacent to the parking lot entrance.
The gate can be opened by using the keypad to enter #3105. The pedestrian entry uses the same key as the pool key.
-
SSID: MakaiTides Password: welcomeguest
The concrete walls can make service sketchy for cellular devices (and this place was built long before cell phones were a thing!) so if you can use WiFi calling it is strongly recommended.
There is also a QR code for linking up to the unit wifi on the welcome placard.
-
There is a pool key provided with a retro motel key tag for accessing the pool. This key doubles as the pedestrian gate key, exercise rooms, and small gate on the north side stairwell behind building #6.
Tennis Court usage requires a deposit and agreement to rules via the main office. Contact them for details.
In-Unit Entertainment
(or: It’s not that we want to stay in but what if we’re sunburned?)
-
The living room tv features a standard cable box capable of other services as well. You can access both live tv and streaming via the Spectrum remote.
Streaming services are available but not included. You may login to your accounts but don’t forget to logout when before you leave!
The universal remote turns both the cable box and tv on. If you press TB power or the TV shows no signal, cycle the TV off and power everything on with the other button to wake the cable box out of power saving mode.
-
The bedroom TV has a “Xumo” box from the cable company. This device allows you to watch live TV and streaming but it is all via apps.
The Xumo app is your live TV with guide. The other apps are the streaming services.
Remember again, log off your accounts when you’re done!
-
Stream all you want but please wear headphones on lanais and in common areas.
Comfort
(or: let’s get some airflow in here)
-
This is the leeward side of the island, so admittedly the weather stays fair and the winds tend to be calm. So we have multiple ceiling fans to help move the air when mother nature chooses not to. It can be a huge relief to just get them on so please give it a go before resorting to Air Conditioning!
-
The Bedroom Fan: A remote control is mounted in a holster to the wall. Feel free to remove it and use it or leave it where it is. This controls the light and the various fans settings.
-
In the living room there are two switches side-by-side. One is overall power to the ceiling fan. The other holds a remote that can be removed for controlling the fan speeds and built in light. We recommend just setting it to high and letting it work but the light can be a nice aid when the ambiance loses way to being able to read your book.
-
The fan on the center facing lanai is pull-chain controlled. Yes it’s big but it moves volumes of air when you need it most watching the ocean below. (just don’t get too excited and jump up and down if you see the green flash)
-
The kitchen fan master power is switch controlled on the opposite wall.
Depending on the weather you might leave the fan running or you may prefer the extra light. Fortunately the pull chains will let you cycle either to meet your desire.
-
The unit features two A/C units. They work well on a very humid day to clear the air. (Honestly aside from humidity the fans do much more for their effort).
Electricity rates in Hawaii are 4x the national average, so we thank you in advance for considering fresh air over that whenever possible. Pro tip: We’ve been known to shut the bedroom door if it’s unbearable to make for comfy conditions without having to close every door and window in the living room and kitchen overnight.
Linens & Things
(it’s not just a store anymore)
-
The master bedroom closet has shelving with additional linens.
-
There is a mattress pad on the hide-a-bed which can make it a little snug when putting away.
Sheets, pillows, and comforter are stored in the bedroom closet.
-
Spare towels are in the bedroom closet.
Uncomfortable Things
(aka the bathroom and the rubbish)
-
Kona Makai’s plumbing is mostly original and its showing its age. Many small things, like the drain screens, help it along. Please keep them in place during use.
-
Due to the age of the plumbing and the number of units that can be impacted by a leak, all units are required to have monitors near water sources.
They will make themselves known if water collects around them, but should mind their own business otherwise.
Please leave them where found and report any unlikely alarms immediately.
-
To save electricity the unit features an on-demand water heater. It is located in the kitchen so hot water is quickly available but it can take a few moments to warm the pipes between it and the bathroom.
-
Recycling is surprisingly specific here. The complex does its best to provide source-separated recycling but that is limited largely to bottles & cans.
Our advice is to gather bottles & cans and place everything else in the trash. It will make it easier when you drop it at the collection points on-site.
